Membership in Fruited Plain

Membership in Fruited Plain Cooperative Society is open and voluntary, and the membership program is organized on an individual basis. Members must be at least 18 years of age.

Capital contribution and voting rights. Each member contributes a single equity share (currently $30) to Fruited Plain, and each member has one vote in Membership decisions about the organization and in electing directors. The equity share is refundable upon request when you leave town or choose to end your membership. Members also contribute to the organization's working capital by paying a markup (currently 12%) over cost on their goods. This contribution is not refundable. Households. We require that for each participating household, all adults of that household become members. We feel this is the fairest way to share the costs and labor of running the cooperative.

Order pick-up requirements. UNFI orders are available for pickup every fourth Wednesday evening (see delivery dates in the Order Schedule). You must be at our warehouse to pick up your order. If you cannot make it, you must arrange for someone else to pick up your order for you. Pick up times are typically from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Work requirements. All members are asked to volunteer on a rotating basis. At our present size, each member is expected to help about twice a year. Currently, this involves meeting and unloading the truck and sorting orders when the truck arrives every 4th Tuesday. Nonworking memberships are allowed, however there is an additional $20 annual fee per nonworking member. Each household which has placed an order is required to send a representative to pick up their order at the specified delivery time.
